Aztec: Achieved Stage 2 Rollup Standard in L2beat Rating
According to Foresight News , privacy-focused Layer 2 network Aztec has announced that it has achieved Stage 2 Rollup status in the L2beat rating. On-chain governance has officially revoked ownership of the Rollup contract, the protocol code is immutable, no administrator can interfere with the protocol, and users can withdraw funds at any time through the "escape hatch" mechanism. Aztec states that it is currently the only decentralized Layer 2 network that natively integrates privacy protection into the protocol layer. L2beat's Stage 2 rating is an important measure of the decentralization of Ethereum Layer 2; reaching this stage means that the project has removed key centralized control, and the protocol's security no longer depends on the operator.
SlowMist: $2.19 million stolen from Aztec Connect contract due to ZK-Rollup L1/L2 state boundary vulnerability
According to Foresight News and SlowMist analysis, the Aztec Connect abandoned contract suffered an attack on June 14th, resulting in a loss of approximately $2.19 million. The root cause was a boundary gap between the traversal range of the L1 settlement loop in the RollupProcessorV3 contract and the committed range of the ZooKeeper public input hash. The attacker constructed a gap between `numRealTxs` and `decoded_slots`, allowing 31 gap slots to be submitted to the L2 state root via ZooKeeper proof, bypassing the L1 contract layer's verification. This allowed the attacker to arbitrarily mint assets in L2 and then withdraw them to L1. The entire attack was completed through a single atomic transaction, consisting of two phases: seven minting operations and seven withdrawal operations. The stolen assets included various tokens such as DAI, wstETH, and ETH. Currently, all stolen funds remain in the attacker's address and have not yet been transferred. Although Aztec Connect was deprecated in March 2024, its immutable contracts still hold users' legacy assets.
Aztec has completed the development of the v5 protocol upgrade code and is preparing to enter the governance proposal stage.
According to Foresight News , privacy-focused L2 blockchain Aztec has completed the development of its v5 protocol upgrade code and is preparing to enter the governance proposal stage. This upgrade is described as the largest since the launch of Alpha Network, covering multiple core areas including block construction, proof performance, penalty mechanisms, privacy protection, and node APIs, integrating 13 AZIPs. The upgrade deployment process is the same as v4: anyone can deploy a new contract. After the sequencer issues a support signal, token holders will vote on the support, and the upgrade will officially take effect after a delay. Node operators can deploy v5 nodes in advance and keep them in standby mode; they will automatically activate after the upgrade is executed.

Aztec Labs: The attacked product was a payment system that was abandoned four years ago, and the company no longer has control over it.
PANews reported on June 18 that Aztec Labs announced on its X platform that the team is investigating a potential vulnerability affecting Aztec payment products that were deprecated in 2021, with approximately $2 million being transferred from immutable smart contracts. The deprecated product was an unalterable Stage 2 Rollup version that was discontinued in 2022. Aztec Labs does not hold administrator keys or any control over the system and cannot suspend or upgrade it. This incident is independent of the Aztec Connect product attack on June 14. Furthermore, the Aztec Foundation stated that the product affected by this attack is unrelated to any smart contracts on the current network or the AZTEC ERC20 token.
