CFTC Chairman: Illinois's crypto "sin tax" legislation could threaten Chicago's status as a financial center.
According to Mars Finance, Mike Selig, Chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), stated in an article on the X platform that Illinois' legislation imposing a so-called "sin tax" on blockchain technology could jeopardize Chicago's future status as a financial market center. The bill even taxes the transfer of crypto assets that do not generate any economic benefits. Selig called it "decelerating legislation," stating that it transforms residents' property rights from "inherent rights" into "permitted privileges." Selig added that against the backdrop of blockchain technology continuously reshaping financial markets, replacing economic growth with a policy choice to tax crypto wallets could be historically viewed as a turning point or even a sign of decline for Chicago's financial development.

A Texas billionaire family has reached a $1 billion data center deal with Bitcoin mining company Empery Digital.
According to a Reuters report, Foresight News reports that Texas-based Hunt Properties and the Crow Holdings family have partnered with Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin mining company Empire Digital to jointly invest in hyperscale data center operations. The three parties have agreed to acquire a 150-gigawatt (GWh) industrial facility in the Midwestern United States for $230 million and convert it into a data center, with future capacity expected to increase to approximately 300 GWh. Simultaneously, the partners have signed a non-binding letter of intent with an unnamed cloud computing company for a potential lease worth up to $1 billion. In addition, Empire Digital has separately agreed to acquire a 25% stake in a privately held entity managed by an affiliate of Hunt Properties for $65 million, in which Crow holds a minority stake. This collaboration combines the Hunt family’s experience in power resources, the Crow family’s real estate expertise, and Empire Digital’s access to publicly traded financing, with the three parties planning to use this as a starting point for a series of data center acquisitions. The Hunt family is known for its oil wealth and ownership of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, while the Crow family is one of the largest real estate families in the United States.
