Zcash developers have reached a consensus on the Ironwood upgrade, which will introduce a new Orchard pool and restrict payment functionality in the old pool.
According to Foresight News , Sean Bowe, a core developer of Zcash, tweeted that Zcash organizations and protocol developers have reached an agreement on specific consensus rule changes for the Ironwood upgrade. Ironwood will introduce a new shielded pool using the Orchard protocol. Simultaneously, the Orchard circuit will add a consensus rule-controlled flag that disables payments to other users within the pool (while retaining change functionality) as a privacy protection mechanism. After the upgrade, the old Orchard pool will enable this restriction and prohibit fund transfers to the old pool by constraining valueBalance. New user payments must be made through the new pool, while migrating funds from the old pool to the new pool is encouraged. Furthermore, users can gradually prove that no fraudulent minting has occurred by migrating funds. Currently, all parties are in the implementation, specification development, and ecosystem support phase, and are advancing multiple auditing and formal verification processes.

ZODL has proposed launching a new privacy pool, Ironwood, with plans to activate and enhance Zcash security by the end of July 2026.
ChainCatcher reports that ZODL, a core contributor to the Zcash ecosystem, has announced a new network upgrade solution and privacy pool, Ironwood, in collaboration with Tachyon, Valar Group, Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs. Ironwood will be built on the existing Orchard protocol and further enhanced for security through formal verification and additional independent audits.

According to Mars Finance, Taylor Hornby discovered a critical forgery vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard liquidity pool on May 29, 2026. Hornby reported the vulnerability to the Zcash Open Development Lab, and a fix was completed on June 2nd through collaborative efforts. This vulnerability could be exploited to secretly create an unlimited number of counterfeit ZECs within Zcash Orchard. Due to Orchard's privacy features, it is cryptographically impossible to prove whether the vulnerability had been exploited before the fix. The vulnerability existed since Orchard's activation in May 2022 until an emergency fix was deployed on June 1, 2026. With the assistance of AI tools, Hornby wrote a complete exploit and generated an unlimited number of undetectable counterfeit ZECs in a local testing environment. Currently, Shielded Labs is collaborating with other Zcash developers to explore network upgrade proposals to allow anyone to verify the integrity of Zcash's supply.
Zcash is nearing completion of its mathematical proof to prevent hidden issuance vulnerabilities; ZEC rises 12%.

This verification work is being carried out by Project Tachyon, targeting Zcash's upcoming Ironwood shielded pool. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox stated that the project is on the verge of producing a mathematical proof, aiming to demonstrate that the latest Zcash privacy pool does not have undetectable proliferation vulnerabilities. This development stems from the disclosure last month of a serious forgery vulnerability in Zcash Orchard's shielded pool. At the time, this vulnerability caused market concerns that Zcash's privacy system might have undetectable hidden inflation risks, causing ZEC to fall by more than 40% within two days. Developers say that with the help of AI-assisted formal verification, proof work that might have previously taken years can now be compressed into weeks.
