Bitmine, SharpLink, and Joe Lubin support Ethlabs, driving the next phase of Ethereum's growth.

Odaily Odaily reports that several former Ethereum Foundation researchers have announced the formation of a non-profit organization, Ethlabs, aimed at propelling Ethereum into its next phase of growth and preparing it for institutional adoption. The organization is backed by Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, as well as two major ETH treasury firms, Bitmine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink. Ethlabs states that as stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, funds, and autonomous AI business activities move onto the blockchain, demand is converging on Ethereum. Ethlabs' goal is to improve Ethereum's performance, trusted interoperability, neutrality, resilience, privacy, and security as it scales to absorb demand. The organization was co-founded by five former senior researchers at the Ethereum Foundation. These researchers were involved in driving many key upgrades to Ethereum over the past decade. The formation of Ethlabs signifies that, in addition to the Ethereum Foundation, large ETH holders and core ecosystem contributors are forming a new independent organization to participate in shaping the future direction of Ethereum. This move comes against the backdrop of recent criticism and personnel changes at the Ethereum Foundation. Over the past period, some ETH holders and community members have criticized the foundation for failing to maintain sufficient competitiveness. Meanwhile, the departure of several senior executives and key research team members has raised concerns about its organizational stability and strategic direction.

Sharplink Co-CEO Joseph Chalom: Ethereum has over 900,000 validators, while Solana has fewer than 800.

According to Odaily Odaily, Joseph Chalom, co-CEO of Sharplink and former executive at Blackrock, stated that Ethereum boasts over 900,000 validators and over 1 million developers, possessing a decentralized advantage that Solana cannot match. Electric Capital data shows that 1,012,824 developers have contributed code to Ethereum, with approximately 232,000 remaining active in the past 12 months. Chalom noted that Solana has fewer than 800 validators, and 92% of them run on the same client. Data shows that Sharplink held 886,725 ETH as of late June. (Bitcoin.com News)

Ethlabs' funders have openly admitted to competing with the Ethereum Foundation for talent, and their roadmaps have begun to overlap.

According to Mars Finance, Ethereum's new research lab, Ethlabs, launched this week. It is jointly funded by Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, Bitmine Immersion Technologies (holding approximately 5.7 million ETH), and Sharplink (holding approximately 876,000 ETH), though the exact funding amount was not disclosed. Sharplink CEO Joseph Chalom stated that Ethlabs will complement the Ethereum Foundation, but acknowledged that the two will "overlap in some areas," and that "the most concentrated talent" will be concentrated in Ethlabs. The lab focuses on faster settlement, cross-chain interoperability, and institutional and AI application readiness, highly aligning with the Foundation's priorities following this week's restructuring. This move comes as the Ethereum Foundation cut its 2026 budget by approximately 40% and eliminated 54 positions this week, which Vitalik Buterin defines as a shift towards an endowment fund model. Former core development coordinator Trent Van Epps warned last week that core development faces a funding gap within three to nine months. Ethlabs' first real test will be the Glamsterdam upgrade, where the roadmaps of the two organizations will converge for the first time in a limited upgrade queue.
