Former Ethereum Foundation member: Ethereum core development may face a funding crisis within 3 to 9 months.
According to Foresight News , former Ethereum Foundation member Trent Van Epps tweeted that the Ethereum Foundation will not be the primary manager of Ethereum for the next 10 years, and the ecosystem needs to reset the social, political, and economic contracts among stakeholders. The Ethereum Foundation's treasury is limited and increasingly constrained; the four-year Client Incentive Program (CIP), used to fund client teams through staking, expired in April 2026 with no apparent alternative. Based on recent communications with core development stakeholders, Ethereum core development (clients, research, coordination) may enter a slow funding crisis within the next 3 to 9 months. Currently, maintaining the delivery capacity of more than 10 client, research, and coordination teams requires approximately $30 million in continuous funding annually. A funding shortfall will lead to the loss of key talent, a decline in protocol maintenance capabilities, and impact on long-term scalability and quantum-resistant computing challenges.
