Matter Labs lays off staff and shifts its focus entirely to the institutional privacy platform Prividium; the future direction of zkSync remains uncertain.

According to Mars Finance, Matter Labs, the developer behind zkSync, announced layoffs on Tuesday and a complete organizational shift to Prividium, an institutional-grade on-chain privacy infrastructure platform. CEO Alex Gluchowski defined the move as a skills restructuring rather than cost-cutting at X, stating that the product the company has been building for regulated financial institutions since 2024 has evolved into Prividium, aiming to provide banks, asset management companies, and other regulated entities with on-chain infrastructure that combines transaction confidentiality and compliance auditing capabilities. Gluchowski indicated that the transformation stemmed from specific product feedback from institutional clients but did not disclose the number of layoffs. According to CoinGecko data, the zkSync token has a market capitalization of approximately $115 million, up 4.3% in the past 24 hours. This transformation reflects a broader trend in the Layer 2 market, following the closure of ZK and L2 projects such as Hyli and Botanix, putting pressure on general-purpose horizontal platforms to find defenses against vertical markets. As of press time, Matter Labs has not made any statement regarding the future of the zkSync network and the ZK token.
