2026 Top 10 Blockchain Billionaires: Satoshi Nakamoto Remains at the Top, Several Whale Lose Private Keys

BlockBeats reported on May 8th that Arkham released a new report listing the top ten richest on-chain traceable cryptocurrency holders in 2026. The net worth is estimated based on publicly available on-chain data. The wealth of those at the top primarily comes from early holdings of Bitcoin or Ethereum, with Satoshi Nakamoto still holding a commanding lead. Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, is worth approximately $89 billion and remains the undisputed richest on-chain holder. His wealth comes entirely from Bitcoin mined in 2009-2010, distributed across approximately 22,000 addresses. This wealth places him among the top 25 richest people in the world. Justin Sun, founder of TRON, is worth approximately $1.5 billion, holding substantial amounts of TRX (1.8 billion, approximately $610 million), stETH, BTC, and other assets in his addresses. James Howells, a Welsh IT worker, is considered a tragic figure for losing his private keys. With approximately $650 million, he mined about $8,000 worth of BTC using his laptop in 2010. In 2013, he accidentally discarded the hard drive containing his private keys, which is now buried in a landfill and unrecoverable. Estonian banker Rain Lohmus has approximately $589 million. In 2014, he participated in the Ethereum ICO with $75,000, earning 250,000 ETH. Due to the loss of his private keys, these assets are visible but inaccessible. Early Bitcoin developer Stefan Thomas has approximately $569 million. He earned $7,002 worth of BTC for creating introductory videos about Bitcoin. His private keys were stored in an IronKey hardware wallet, but the cipher paper was lost. He has only two attempts left before the data is permanently erased. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has approximately $533 million, with his wealth primarily derived from the ETH allocated at the time of Ethereum's genesis. He also frequently received large amounts of tokens airdropped by the meme coin project. Irish drug trafficker Clifton Collins had approximately $447 million in assets. He acquired $6,000 worth of BTC between 2011 and 2012 at a price of approximately $5/BTC. His private key was lost while hidden in a fishing rod, and he was later arrested. In March 2026, one of his wallets suddenly activated, and police recovered approximately $35 million worth of BTC. Cobo co-founder and CEO DiscusFish had approximately $213 million in assets, primarily holding BTC in his address. Patricio Worthalter, founder of POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol), had approximately $149 million in assets, primarily holding ETH and related assets. Renowned trader James Fickel had approximately $115 million in assets. He bought ETH at a low price in 2016 and still holds approximately 49,000 ETH. He was previously involved in the ETH/BTC exchange rate fluctuations.

The Bank of Korea has released a regulatory proposal suggesting that personal stablecoin transactions exceeding $10,000 should be limited to transfers from verified wallets.

According to Mars Finance, the legal team of the Bank of Korea has published a research paper titled "Regulatory Scheme for Foreign Remittance Transactions Targeting Stablecoins," proposing regulatory recommendations for large-scale stablecoin transactions. The paper, referencing current South Korean foreign exchange control regulations, proposes constraints on stablecoin transfers exceeding $10,000 between individuals, requiring such transactions to be conducted only between officially certified wallets, along with a pre-reporting mechanism. The institution acknowledges that there are technical obstacles to fully controlling unregistered wallets, but due to anti-money laundering compliance requirements, it is necessary to strengthen restrictions on large-scale cross-border stablecoin fund flows. South Korean regulators have previously repeatedly stated the need to improve the monitoring system for cross-border crypto asset transactions using non-custodial wallets; this paper further refines and implements the regulatory approach.
