Five years later, recruitment clues reveal a complete picture: ByteDance is quietly restarting mobile phone R&D. According to Beating's monitoring, five years after shutting down its Smartisan phone business, ByteDance is re-entering the underlying R&D of smartphones in a completely new form. This inference stems from a comprehensive data analysis of all job postings on ByteDance's official recruitment system. After comparing the specific responsibilities of hundreds of underlying positions, the facts are very clear: ByteDance is not just focused on developing lightweight edge AI applications, but is building a complete mobile phone-level hardware and software foundation; the upper layer is reconstructing Agent interaction and the Android/RTOS system, while the lower layer is delving into structural stacking, baseband, and network communication, and has already reached the NPI (New Product Introduction) trial production stage aligned with foundry production lines. On the hardware R&D and mass production side, ByteDance's deployment is heading straight into the deep waters of the hardware supply chain. The Shenzhen R&D node, located in the heart of the supply chain, is intensively releasing positions in whole-machine process, PCB high-speed interconnect, testing process, and hardware baseband, fully connecting with foundry production lines. The structural engineer position requires expertise in new device stacking, mid-frame, battery cover, and hinge design, with experience in flagship hardware development such as foldable screens, LIPO packaging, and IP68/IP69K being a plus. The overall process engineer position requires mastery of DFM/DFA/DFS analysis, NPI pilot production implementation, AOI inspection, dispensing, and spot welding processes. These roles are completely different from typical internet software development, exhibiting a distinctly large-scale hardware manufacturer character. At the system foundation level, Android system experts based in Beijing will oversee the entire process from project initiation, system design, integration development to mass production delivery. Their responsibilities cover ODM/OEM integration, Android Framework, HAL, Vendor interface adaptation, and Qualcomm platform optimization, even overseeing factory flashing, aging, and production line testing. Simultaneously, the mobile OS team is actively recruiting experts in SoC chip adaptation, BSP, RTOS kernel, WiFi drivers, graphics engines, system power consumption, and DFX, essentially disassembling and completely reconstructing the underlying system framework of a smartphone. The most direct breakthrough occurred with the "Doubao Mobile Assistant" team, which was initially considered a purely software project by outsiders. The Doubao Mobile Assistant team's R&D focus is now shifting entirely towards the hardware level, with roles covering touch drivers, NFC, system thermal management, peripheral BSP, audio systems, and sensor fusion. A more significant signal is the recruitment of a Telephony RIL Modem product architect, requiring experience in Qualcomm or MediaTek (MTK) cellular network delivery and familiarity with Telephony systems, RIL drivers, field testing, CTA certification, and RF antenna development. This indicates that ByteDance's R&D boundaries have transcended the pure application layer, penetrating the core communication baseband and wireless RF fields of mobile phones. On the upper-layer interaction side, AI is reshaping the human-computer interface. The Agent software architect in the mobile OS department will be responsible for designing a multi-agent collaborative interaction framework, using a unified standard protocol to access internal and external intelligent agents, achieving low-latency, multimodal dynamic decision-making; the perception and memory algorithm roles in Doubao Mobile Assistant focus on user long-term memory, multimodal perception, and proactive service mechanisms. This confirms a deeper strategic ambition: ByteDance is not content with simply delivering Doubao as a pre-installed app to the device, but is trying to reshape Doubao into the primary entry point for the entire hardware system.
