Goldfinch's African crypto lending project collapses, GFI token plummets 99.8%

According to Protos, Goldfinch, a decentralized lending protocol led by a16z and positioned to serve the unbanked population in Africa, is mired in crisis. On-chain data shows that two of the project's eight borrowers have officially defaulted, and six have entered debt restructuring, with cumulative losses exceeding $18 million. Depositors are lamenting that "$50 million has gone down the drain." Its native token, GFI, has plummeted from a high of $32.94 in January 2022 to below $0.07, a drop of 99.8%, and the project's market capitalization has shrunk from a peak of $390 million to less than $6 million. Goldfinch previously lent over $100 million to borrowers in 18 countries, including a Kenyan motorcycle rental company and a Nigerian payroll platform. However, the core problem lies in the severe lack of off-chain credit verification, with frequent instances of borrowers misappropriating funds and refusing to repay. As default rates climbed, the project quietly abandoned its positioning in emerging African markets and turned to credit funds from institutions such as Ares and Apollo, rendering its original vision of inclusive finance meaningless.

The Bank of Korea has released a regulatory proposal suggesting that personal stablecoin transactions exceeding $10,000 should be limited to transfers from verified wallets.

According to Mars Finance, the legal team of the Bank of Korea has published a research paper titled "Regulatory Scheme for Foreign Remittance Transactions Targeting Stablecoins," proposing regulatory recommendations for large-scale stablecoin transactions. The paper, referencing current South Korean foreign exchange control regulations, proposes constraints on stablecoin transfers exceeding $10,000 between individuals, requiring such transactions to be conducted only between officially certified wallets, along with a pre-reporting mechanism. The institution acknowledges that there are technical obstacles to fully controlling unregistered wallets, but due to anti-money laundering compliance requirements, it is necessary to strengthen restrictions on large-scale cross-border stablecoin fund flows. South Korean regulators have previously repeatedly stated the need to improve the monitoring system for cross-border crypto asset transactions using non-custodial wallets; this paper further refines and implements the regulatory approach.
