Bessant-Powell urgently summoned Wall Street CEOs; Anthropic's new model triggers financial regulatory alarm.

On April 10, Bloomberg reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessenter and Federal Reserve Chairman Powell convened an emergency meeting at the Treasury Department headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to discuss the significant cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic's latest AI model, Mythos. The CEOs in attendance included: Jane Fraser of Citigroup, Littlehead Pick of Morgan Stanley, Brian Moynihan of Bank of America, Charlie Schaaf of Wells Fargo, and David Solomon of Goldman Sachs. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase was unable to attend. All invited banks were designated as systemically important financial institutions by top regulatory agencies. Anthropic has stated that Mythos, under user commands, can identify and exploit security vulnerabilities in virtually all major operating systems and web browsers. Regulators are concerned that if the model falls into the hands of hackers, it could usher in a new era of cyberattacks. Anthropic has currently only made Mythos available to a limited number of technology and financial institutions, including Amazon, Apple, and JPMorgan Chase, all of whom are part of "Project Glasswing," a project aimed at proactively patching vulnerabilities in critical systems. Meanwhile, Anthropic is embroiled in a legal battle with the Trump administration over the Pentagon's designation of it as a "supply chain risk," with a federal appeals court this week refusing to suspend the ruling. This emergency meeting is the latest signal that regulators are classifying AI-driven cyberattacks as one of the biggest risks to the financial industry, and a direct reflection of the regulatory ripple effects triggered by the release of Mythos.
