OpenAI's AI chip collaboration with Broadcom has stalled in funding negotiations. Reports indicate that when OpenAI and chip design firm Broadcom officially announced their joint development of a custom AI chip last year, the two companies considered the collaboration a done deal. Several months later, according to an internal memo and two sources familiar with the negotiations, the two sides are now discussing Broadcom funding the first phase of chip production. This phase requires 1.3 gigawatts of data center computing power and costs approximately $18 billion. Based on this cost, the complete 10-gigawatt project, codenamed "Nexus," would cost a staggering $180 billion just for chip production, not including data center construction and other ancillary expenses.
