According to Beating, Andrew Ng, the father of Google Brain, published an article today refuting the widespread claim that "AI will cause mass unemployment," pointing out that it not only lacks any data support but also hides a profit-driven calculation within the tech industry. He cited software engineering, the field most impacted by AI-coded intelligent agents, as an example, noting that hiring in this field remains strong and the overall US unemployment rate is at a healthy level of 4.3%. He asserted that the future will only see an "AI jobapalooza," creating even more jobs. Ng ruthlessly exposed the profit chain behind this panic. First, there are cutting-edge AI labs, who use the apocalyptic scenario of "AI taking over humanity" to conversely demonstrate the power of their technology. Second, there are AI software companies; traditional SaaS software can only charge $100 to $1000 per user per year, but by packaging AI as a "magic weapon that can replace employees with an annual salary of $100,000," even if they raise the price to $10,000, customers will still find it worthwhile. Finally, there are large corporations. Packaging layoffs as "the introduction of AI has improved productivity" makes management appear shrewd and forward-thinking in the capital markets. This is far more respectable than admitting, "We blindly expanded our workforce during the pandemic's low interest rates and now we have to clean up the mess." Andrew Ng acknowledges that AI is indeed changing the way we work, but this is entirely different from a labor market collapse.
