Despite accusing each other of violations, the US and Iran returned to the negotiating table; analysts say both sides have their own agendas.

According to a CNN report on June 21, Sina Azodi, director of the Middle East Studies Program at George Washington University, stated that despite both the US and Iran claiming violations by the other, both countries have sent senior officials to Switzerland for negotiations because they have a "vested interest" in ending the conflict. Azodi pointed out that Israel's attacks on Lebanon constitute a violation of the memorandum of understanding for Iran, and the US may also interpret Tehran's claim to close the Strait of Hormuz as a violation of the memorandum. Azodi also stated that Tehran may want to "test and see" whether Washington can restrain Israel and end hostilities in Lebanon. As of the time of writing, Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif and Army Chief of Staff Munir have arrived in Switzerland to participate in technical negotiations between the US and Iran within the framework of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.
