Researchers predict that AI applications will drive a new round of shortages and price increases for 8-inch wafers.
According to Mars Finance, Sigmaintell Consulting stated that with the continued growth in demand for 8-inch wafers driven by AI data centers, coupled with factors such as proactive production cuts by leading foundries and increased outsourcing orders from IDMs, the global 8-inch foundry supply and demand is expected to continue tightening from 2027 onwards. Although the trend of transitioning from 8-inch to 12-inch wafers can provide some relief, it cannot reverse the long-term tight supply of 8-inch wafers. Given the clear upward trend in both capacity utilization and upstream material prices, 8-inch wafer foundry services are highly likely to experience price increases between 2027 and 2030. Mindray Electronics: Wafer foundry Guangxin Microelectronics raised prices by 10%-20% in June; Jingrui Electronics raised prices by approximately 15% in July.
According to Mars Finance, Mindray Electronics (300656.SZ) released an investor relations activity record announcement, stating that its controlling wafer foundry, Guangxin Microelectronics, will raise its foundry prices by 10-20% starting in June 2026. Guangxin Microelectronics' production capacity and orders are at full capacity. The planned capacity of its Phase I production plant is 100,000 6-inch silicon-based wafers per month. The company is strengthening its financial strength through introducing social capital, new bank financing, and launching a 1 billion yuan private placement. Equipment is gradually being installed and debugged, and the company will expedite the full production of the Phase I project and launch the Phase II project at an appropriate time. Jingrui Electronics, a wafer raw material company in which the company holds a stake, issued a price increase notice in June 2026, with a price increase of approximately 15%, effective July 1st. Jingrui Electronics has completed approximately 200 million yuan in equity financing this year and is building a new single crystal rod project, expected to be put into production by the end of this year or early next year. After production begins, it will become one of the few companies in China to achieve a complete silicon wafer industry chain layout. Jingrui Electronics is one of the few domestic semiconductor material companies that has achieved mass production of SOI products. Its downstream applications mainly cover MEMS sensors, aerospace radiation-hardened devices, and high-end power devices. The company's controlling stake in Guangwei Integrated Circuits, a power semiconductor design company, has seen continuous sales growth for its core product, MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Diodes), increasing from approximately 1,000 units per month in early 2025 to over 10,000 units per month currently, and is expected to continue growing. Gekko Microelectronics, which has seen two consecutive days of limit-up trading: The company's 200-megapixel product development is progressing smoothly and preliminary cooperation intentions have been reached with some customers, but no products have yet been shipped to customers.
Mars Finance reports that Gekko Microelectronics (688728.SH) issued an announcement regarding abnormal stock trading fluctuations and trading risks. Recently, the company's ultra-high pixel product introduction to major clients and its Lingang 12-inch wafer fab have attracted significant attention. Internal verification confirms that the company's 200-megapixel product development is progressing smoothly, and preliminary cooperation intentions have been reached with some clients, but no product shipments have yet occurred. For many years, the company has focused on the CIS and display driver chip field, and the Lingang fab currently mainly produces the company's high-end CIS products. The company will continue to focus on its core business of process development and product research and development. Information disseminated by relevant market institutions does not represent the company's actual operating progress and does not constitute a business commitment. The realization of the above projects will be affected by various factors such as the policy environment, market demand, and the company's own operating conditions, and there is a risk that they may not be achieved. Sun Guoliang of Muxi Technology: Orders for some products are already booked until next year or even later; the MXC600 chip series has already been shipped in large quantities.
Mars Finance reported on July 8th that during the "Vibrant China Research Tour" in Shanghai, Sun Guoliang, Chief Product Officer and Senior Vice President of Muxi Technology, revealed that orders for some of the company's products are already booked into next year and beyond. The MXC600 chip series is the company's main product this year and is already shipping in large quantities. Regarding the contradiction in the market between "hardware shortages" and "concerns about computing power surplus," he believes that currently, general-purpose, easy-to-use, stable, and reliable computing power is scarce, even extremely difficult to obtain. The surplus computing power refers to computing power applicable to some non-general-purpose architectures, capable of running only previous-generation models or certain niche models, which constitutes a certain degree of overcapacity. Reports indicate that TSMC is significantly expanding its PIC (Picture Assembly and Display) production capacity, which is expected to reach 25,000 wafers per month by 2028.
According to Mars Finance, analysts predict that TSMC's photonic integrated circuit (PIC) production capacity will experience rapid growth. TSMC's capacity is expected to increase from the current level of approximately 500 wafers per month to 10,000 wafers per month by the second quarter of 2026, further increasing to 15,000 wafers per month in the fourth quarter, and projected to reach at least 25,000 wafers per month by 2028. Analysts estimate that, assuming each wafer contains 648 dies, the annualized output of TSMC's PIC production will increase significantly from approximately 4 million units to 78 million units after the monthly capacity increases from 500 to 10,000 wafers. If capacity further reaches 25,000 wafers per month, the annualized PIC output is projected to reach 194 million units. (Taiwan Commercial Times)
